The show was great. The guys where in better shape than alkmaar (they had a bit of a cold). the solo's where so amazing. steve weingart almost gives me the
same goosbumps as dave. oscar really knocked me of my feet &steve...actually i need not tell you... he keeps amazing me everytime again. who else can play
an electric guitar making it sound almost like a real sitar? and all the other stuff he did, you can hardly describe..... pure eargasm!!!! i became a
toto fan cause their music really opens my heart and get's me back in balance &el grupo had the same effect on me. at alkmaar, steve asked everyone to be
nice to each other cause there's already enough misery in the world. and apparantly we all did so." let's make this a better world". we stayed on after the
concert and again el grupo came to chat &sign the limiteded edition cd. this was the first time i got to know steve in real &i must say: he is a real
nice guy with a very warm heart. he gave me a warm brotherly hugh, thanks a lot for that. my heart got healed a bit more. also steve weingart is a beautifull
human being. still enjoying the 2 concerts and looking forward to the "falling in between" cd &world tour. and of course seeing you, my toto family again
for some more warmt, joy &eargasms. love

Our review is a bit late, but the memory of that night still lingers. My husband and I went to see Steve Lukather on Saturday, August 6th at the Baked Potato.
As you all know by now, the band was called "El Grupo." The bass player, Oskar Cartaya, who we caught a while back at the Café Cordiale in Sherman Oaks, was
right on and displayed some very melodic, soulful bass runs and solos. The drummer on board was Joey Heredia, who we've seen at La Ve Lee in Studio City some
time back, also, had a refreshing approach to a lot of familiar tunes. Steve Weingart, whom we've never seen, was much more impressive than we were expecting...great
showman. In fact, the entire group was very entertaining and exciting to watch.
The set list went something like this:
*Dismemberment-Los Lobotomys
*Freedom-Jimi Hendriks
*A David Garfield tune
*Hold the line~ha, ha...Actually what happened was, Steve said he was going to play a particular tune and some girl yelled out, "Did you say Africa?". He started
laughing and said that, that had never happened to him before at the Baked Potato, and that's why he does these gigs with other ensembles; for variety, outside
of TOTO...........he proceeded to describe this "Vegas Lounge" version of Hold the Line that he conjured up, then the band joined in and they all played a few
lines of that smokey lounge style tune....very funny!
*A Weather Report tune
*Steve's solo-Little Wing~magnificently done...I personally love this song!
Speaking of Toto, we met this guy named Greg, who was sitting next to us and we talked a bit when we realized that he was a huge Toto fan as well. He flew in
from the Bay area for all 4 shows....what a dedicated guy!
Right on, Steve.........great show!!!

Paris, France - 2 July 2005 and Weert, Netherlands - 3 July 2005
Hello !
I'm just back from my trip in Paris and Weert where I see Luke and his new amazing band.
1st july : Paris, Elysée Montmartre, France :
The Paris event took place in the famous place Elysée Montmartre (where Luke played two fabulous gigs in 1994 with Los Lobotomys in june and in december).
They are around 850-900 fans in the place.
Luke, Oscar, Joey and Steve came on stage and stat the show at 8:15PM. We were during 96 minutes in Eden !!!
An amazing setlist :
1 : Dismemberment
2 : Freedom
3 : I'm Buzzed
4 : Hero wit a 1000 eyes
5 : Little Wing
6 : Led Boots
7 : Joy to the World
8 : Brush with the Blues
During the most of songs Luke leads each member for incredible solo part. At the end of Led boots some latino rhythms were played by the band, leading by a
fantastic Joey. Luke in ceremony master was fantastic. Oscar did incredible bass solos. And Steve, on Keyboards, did a fabulous job !
The Parisian audience was fantastic, a new time ;) The audience continue to sing after Hero and Oscar, then Luke, Joey and Steve played a little bit more for
us. Steve played a "classical moment" as Oscar called" and Luke did some funny movements on stages. These guys like being together and we can see that on stage :)
At the end of the gigs I ask to myself : how they will do to play only an hour in Weert ???
Saturday 2nd july : Weert (Ned) : Bospop Festival :
At 3:05PM, the band is coming on stage. The audience was hot, as in Paris. The setlist was the same as in Paris except Joy to the World. The band cut a lot of
solo parts in the most of songs but gave more intensity and power in this short show (ONLY 1 Hour). The show was fantastic and the band not tired ! After an
hour of a pure twister, the guys leave the stage. The audience was on another planet, another galaxy !
Thank you guys for these fantastic moments. Hope you'll do soon a new tour with, why not, a record.

Dear Toto99,
It's a few days since the concert and I have now had time to reflect on the night. The gig was a bit of a blur as a whole because it was mostly a structured
jam session. I didn't expect anything less to be honest.
The gig kicked off with "Dismemberment", but beyond that I wouldn't even try to name any the other "jazz/blues" tracks. Suffice to say, Luke was on top form
both as a musician and an entertainer. He even found time to play the comedian, although Michael Jackson may beg to differ.
The high points of the evening for me (and my 23 year old daughter) were the more traditional tracks. "Little Wing", "Freedom" and "Hero with 1,000 eyes".
Don't get me wrong, there were some great riffs going down in the jazz numbers, but I would have preferred more songs. The whole of the "Luke" album was
totally ignored.
Shouts for Toto songs were met with understandable derision from Luke. Luke responded with a polite, "Hey, this is me man !". The most bizarre request was
for "Party in Simon's Pants", which seemed a bit odd to me, given that Simon was stateside. "Not gonna happen." replied Luke.
I left with my ears ringing (I was about one yard away from Luke's monitor speaker), and my camera full of snaps. The venue was great. Really intimate, up
close and personal. Luke has a presence on stage which, as my daughter says, makes you feel like he is playing for you personally. His eye contact says it all.
Thank you Luke and "El Groupo" for a great night. More songs next time please!
Love and best wishes
"We haven't played together since November! Hope our rehearsal was OK?"
As most of the 500-strong crowd who packed into this excellent venue on Wednesday night would agree, it was a great deal more than just OK! It was everything
that most of us have come to expect from Steve Lukather. From the moment Luke and his brilliant band literally jumped on stage and launched into "Dismemberment",
we knew it wasn't going to be OK; it was going to be superb! And it was.
That first number gave each member of the band the chance to solo - Joey Heredia sounding great behind the kit with Oscar Cartaya as his faithful rhythm partner.
Both guys clearly looking relaxed and enjoying themselves. Steve Weingart, too, looked happy and played some amazing stuff on his Yamaha rig.
On into a crowd-pleasing "Freedom", then a Michael Jackson joke from Luke, then a wonderful keyboard solo from "young Steve", as Luke called him. His solo was
great, and almost note-for-note to the one he does on the Dave Weckl live track, "Oasis", a track he wrote for his wife. Somehow that went into a rocking Mike
Landau number, before Luke began the instantly recognisable riff to "Little Wing".
"Hero With 1000 Eyes" was next, a right crowd-pleaser, and then things got funky with some cool clav sounds from Steve Weingart and a bit of slap from Oscar.
Joey took a big Latin-style solo in this one, vocals et al.
After leaving the stage for a little while, Luke and the boys returned for "Joy To The World" - "I recorded it in July, might as well play it in July", Luke
said, no-one cared if it was Christmas or not! Things came to a close with a slow blues, probably not the band's first choice for a finish, but the playing
was outstanding again.
Special thanks a million go to Will Minting for setting up the Meet n'Greet with Luke after the show.
Steve Lukather - Hendrix Files Tour
Platte Zaol, Maastricht, The Netherlands - 10 October 2003
Platte Zaol, Maastricht, The Netherlands - 10 October 2003
Friday 10 oct. was a very interesting day for me. Why? I'll explain. I had a ticket for the Hendrix files concert in the "Platte zaol" in Maasticht. I also
knew that around 16:00h that day Jan Akkerman was going to play in a cafe called "Falstaff" in Maastricht. So I quit working a little earlier to go to the
cafe and meet my girlfriend and see Jan Akkerman play in that cafe. But as time passed by and Jan Akkerman was still not there (caught in traffic I heard later)
I was just deciding and telling my girlfriend to leave and go home and eat before going to the Hendrix files concert. But at that moment I see Steve Lukather in
front of me together with Philip B. (organizer of the H.F. concert). I was amazed and Steve was shaking some hands of people and I thought "well, let me give the
man a hand" he must have thought something like "who the hell are you?" I can imagine but that didn't bother me.
Now what's the coincidence for me of it all? Well, two weeks before I bought the live in Amsterdam DVD (it's super) but a week before I bought a new electric
guitar and out of several different Musicman models (which are all very good guitars) I choose the "Luke" model and boy I rediscovered guitar. So, this I just
had to tell Steve.
Concerning the concert that night, well, it was awesome. I think the audience was blown away by Steve's performance, one huge energetic bomb. Super, really!
Another cool aspect is the fact that Steve played with Eric Fox on bass and he's a teacher. 23 years ago he was my teacher when I was 10 years old. He then
played already in bands (at that time Avalon). Occasionally I meet him (quit some time ago now) and it's always interesting to hear what he's doing at the moment.
Well that's all folks. This was what I wanted to tell you
Greetings
Friday, 10th october at Maastricht - Hendrix-files. Man he kicked ass ! My husband and i saw Steve already several times with Toto and we thought we've seen
it all ... but this concert was REALLY awesome. Hendrix songs and Steve Lukather on the guitar - it can't get better than that.
Especially the song Angel (in memory of Noel Redding) was breathetaking. This song was straight from the heart and soul. The whole concert he played with such
power and emotion that touched everybody, believe me. I looked around in the crowd - i think my husband and i were almost the youngest (35 years) and we saw
people of 60-65 years youg (some of them with earplugs in) really enjoying themselves...
Now we're looking forward to Night of the Proms in Antwerp which is again totally different. Steve's really a musical cameleon and that's why i respect him so
much. So Steve take care (don't get sick again) and see you in Antwerp on 6th november - it should be fun as usual.
PS : next time you're comming to the Hendrix files please bring Simon. My husband is a drummer and Simon is his god.
I went to the hendrixfiles on the 10th of october. Steve Lukather played there together with Jan Akkerman. The concert was really great. For almost 2000
people he played Hendrix songs and solo songs. He played for one hour, and then a last song (hey Joe) together with Jan Akkerman. I came specially for
Steve, but also the Jan Akkerman fans and the people who came for the Hendrix songs were impressed by the way Steve played his guitar. It was a night
to remember.
Jeff Healey &Steve Lukather
Healey's, Toronto, Canada - 22 August 2002
Healey's, Toronto, Canada - 22 August 2002
Finally! Toto, or a Toto representative back in Canada. "It's been 14 years" as Luke so aptly put it Thursday night a jam packed Healey's bar in
downtown Toronto. Mr. Lukather joined Jeff Healey and his house band for 2 sets of amazing jams and covers of classic Blues. It was my first chance
to see the man play in person, and I have to say he is the consummate musician, and a genuinely nice man.
It's impressive to see someone of his caliber be so courteous to the other players on the stage. Not once did he try to overplay anyone. If he
overshadows another it's simply because the man is brilliant. All night long Steve would follow along, slipping a little lick here and there, until
it was his turn to shine. And shine he did. I must say, though I had never had the opportunity to see him perform before, it was vintage Luke. One could
not help but to notice the trademark riffs, and licks that we've all come to admire with such awe.
It was a night to remember as he, Jeff Healey and his band traded licks on such classics as Superstition, Miss You (Rolling Stones), and Red
House (on which Steve sang lead). An awesome experience. Thanks for coming Steve.
Now, bring the rest of the guys with you next time please.
Steve Lukather and Larry Carlton
Valle Giulia Festival in Rome, Italy - July 17, 2001
Valle Giulia Festival in Rome, Italy - July 17, 2001
And here We are at the last date of this amazing tour! I'm talkin'about the show of the 17th of July in Rome. That was the last date of the
European tour of Steve and Larry. The show has been simply fantastic! They started with"The Pump"like ever. But before to start, when we're waitin'
for entries opening, Steve went onto stage to check his guitar and mic.Suddenly he began to sing and play "Little wing"with all the band... I
gave myself the creeps when I heard his voice live for the first time! All the musicians were unbelievable and showed their skills in their
solos ! Special mention must go to Rick Jackson(Keyboards):It's incredible what a man can do with his fingers (a keyboard player's opinion!)!
But the very remarkable features of that show are two,in my opinion: Larry and Steve blended perfectly two genres of music that seem to be
distant:Rock and Jazz ( please note, I said: PERFECTLY!). The second is: Steve has an incredible personality. He kept on jokin'all the show
long even if he was so tired and stressed (remember that was the last show in Europe!).On "Blues Force" he played with his blues voice asking
us to repeat what he sang(We worked our throat to the bone!eh eh eh!). I know there were some sound problems when they played in the clubs but
in a park like Villa Borghese, IT SOUNDED LIKE HELL !!! Then,at the end of the show Steve still had the strenght to bear a little host of fans
(including me!)waiting for him near his bus and asking him signature,photos...I TOUCHED Mr STEVE "LUKE" LUKATHER! I also got his pick and his
autograph and then I took a photo together with him!"I touched the sky with my finger"that night!I'm a Steve's fan only since 2 years but my
joy...ya know...it's like shakin' God's hand! He's a great man because artists usually believe they're stars and so unreachable from their fans.
He's not that kind of person!
He's a real STAR
and we hope his light will keep on shining so long above our heads!
See You soon Steve
Steve Lukather and Larry Carlton
Spectrum, Augsburg, Germany - July 13, 2001
Spectrum, Augsburg, Germany - July 13, 2001
I was amazed to hear that Larry Carlton und Steve Lukather are coming to Germany in July. Two great guitar players on one stage - not an everyday experience!
The Spectrum Club is (my guess) a 500 people clubhouse in the heart of the town Augsburg which is 1/2 driving hour from Munich.
The show started at 7.15 pm. I didnt saw the drummer Greg Bissonette - as far as i know he has some other important work right now with a different
band. Gary Furgeson took his place.
In my opinion, the bassman was one of the best i´ve seen. He did a solo which was astonishing. Everything looked so easy and smooth when he did the
bass, but it sounded perfect. The Band played 6 or 7 tunes for almost 2 hours. Room 335 was the second last song and all songs sounded a bit different
compared to the live album. For one blues song Steve did vocales - all other songs were instrumental.
After the show, Luke and Larry had an autograph session and signed many CDs and other stuff. Luke seemed to be bit tired.
Everybody did a great job. So, whats next? Luke told the audience, he jammed at the montreux jazz festival with brian may (Queen) and some other
musicians. Brian May and Steve Lukather - that would be an ass-kicking show!

Steve Lukather and Larry Carlton
Colos-Saal, Aschaffenburg, Germany - July 12, 2001
Colos-Saal, Aschaffenburg, Germany - July 12, 2001
Hey there - fans of Luke and Toto somewhere out in the world! This is a review of the gig last night in Aschaffenburg/Germany on Thursday,12th July
2001.The show started at 21.15h in a very cool small jazz club in Aschaffenburg - a nice little village 20 miles away from Frankfurt. Inside the club
it was so hot, that I thought I would collapse before the begining. But I didn't want to give up my place 2 meters in front of Luke's CAE-
Footcontroller and Micro. He used his rack with 4 Rivera- Los Lobotom- Tops (one for dry sound, one for effects left and one for effects
right and I think one for the worst case). On this tour he uses a very cool speaker system: 6 pieces of 1x12" - boxes which are put together.
(I don't know if it's a Rivera system?!?).His effect-rack couldn't be seen, but I think he uses his standart-features: power conditioner,
lexicon pcm 70 for his typicall delayed echo, dbx160 compressor, hush and the CAE audio controllers etc.The gig started with a 3 minutes
intro of 'The Pump' only with drums, bass and keyboards - then Luke and Larry jumped onto the stage and began to pump with their guitars.
The sound was very good the first hour - later it got to loud for the small club room, so it was sometimes impossible to hear what they
were playing. And Rick Jackson put his hand on one ear to hear the others playing straight out of the monitor. It was a very cool and relaxed
atmosphere - Steve was joking a lot, as usual. He was wearing a cool t-shirt with a picture on it that shows a man who sniffs a typicall
local drink of Frankfurt (the so-called "Aeppler" - a kind of wine made of apples) instead of a 'line'! And the text on the shirt says:"Welcome
to Frankfurt" - So, everybody in the audience had to laugh about it.....(Luke - always cool and funny) They played all numbers of the CD plus 2
extra songs - one of it was a real gun loose blues number with Luke on voices. Everybody of the band had the time to show his own soli but in the
end the whole show time was a little bit to short, I think - one and a half hour including bonus songs!! But it was a great time to see and hear
'2 -generations -guitar playing' in a small club at the end of the german world. A 'must be seen' for every musician in the guitar world.
Steve Lukather and Larry Carlton
Paradiso, Amsterdam, Holland - July 11, 2001
Paradiso, Amsterdam, Holland - July 11, 2001
Larry Carlton and Steve Lukather did two sold out evening concerts in the Amsterdam pop temple Paradiso on the day that turned out to be a
memorable one in Dutch rock history. In the afternoon of July 11th the Dutch rock legend Herman Brood decided to end his life by jumping off the
roof of the Amsterdam Hilton Hotel. It's a question whether that was the reason for the slightly disappointing in store for Larry and Luke at the
Fame music store later that afternoon. Only a few people took the trouble to have their copy of No substitutions signed by Larry and Luke and
have a little chat.
In the evening on the other hand Paradiso was crowded with various music lovers who wanted to create an atmosphere of open minds and open ears.
Lots of Carlton, Lukather, Toto and No substitutions fans were anxious to know what this special combination, supported by Chris Kent (bass),
Rick Jackson (keys) and Gary Ferguson (drums, replacing Gregg Bissonette who is working with Jeff Lynne on the ELO Zoom tour) was all about.
The day before Larry and Luke stated that they decided to do two shows on one evening to service 2 x 600 interested fans because the tight tour
schedule didn't made it possible for them to stay more than one concert day in Holland.
During the evening it became obvious that they played the same set list two times (with a different crowd) in two pretty different shows. The
set list with seven song titles (The pump, Blues 4orce from the Fourplay album yes, please!, Only yesterday, Red house, Don't give it up, Room
335 and the Joe Sample encore Put it where you wan't it turned out to be a kind of framework for musical improvisations, challenges, lessons,
scouting, dynamics and surprises. Within this framework there was plenty of space for funny (Mary had a little lamb), subtle (Third stone from
the sun) or raging (Smell yourself) intermezzos, raging bass and drum solos (in Don't give it up) and having a party, especially in the funky
encore Put it where you want it. After all Larry and Luke as well as the other musicians developed through the years an unbelievable huge
"database" of licks, melodies, chords and techniques that make them play everything they want at any moment.
Both shows in Paradiso made this one clear: the quintessence of a Carlton/Lukather concert is all about love for music, love and respect for each
other, mutual learning, longing for unexpected turns, crossing borders, musical meditation, fun and having a great party. It's quite an experience
to notice a completely quiet audience during the subtle improvisations of Larry at one moment and an awesome exited crowd a couple of minutes later
having a great party whipped up and encouraged by Luke. Obviously a Carlton/Lukather show in 2001 is quite different from the shows in Japan (and the
one on No substitutions) three years ago, because Larry and Luke are constantly reaching out for a higher level of musical challenge and perfection.
Let's hope they got the power of endurance to go on challenging each other and their fans.

Staatsoper, Vienna, Austria - July 5, 2001
Staatsoper, Vienna, Austria - July 5, 2001
What can I say, it was still amazing, for the audience and the band as well, because the venue was the opera house from vienna, as you may know for his
classical tradition. The boys played a great and inspired gig and had a superb sound. Here are the set list from that evening: The Pump, Blues Force,
Only Yesterday, Red House, Don´t Give It Up, Room 335, Put It Where You Want It, Cause We Ended As Lovers. After Blues Force Luke did some (serious!?)
jokes about the location. He wished all could see the view from the stage and so there jumped a guy with a camera on stage. Luke handled him his guitar
and Larry did a shot with the camera from Luke and the surprised guy. After the show Luke and Larry came out for a autograph session and I had a chance
to meet Luke, one of mine all time favourite musician. A absolut fantastic night at the opera.
Steve Lukather and Larry Carlton
Ocean, London, UK - July 3, 2001.
Ocean, London, UK - July 3, 2001.
Luke and Larry kicked off the European leg of the No Substitutions Tour at the supercool new Ocean venue in London. Fresh from a week off after a
string of dates on home soil, the band gave another take on the genius liberally displayed on the live CD. A London listings magazine had promised
that Luke &Larry would be "spanking the jazz plank" and warned gig-goers to "expect plenty of axeman histrionics." Hmm. Well, I'm reporting to
the discerning converted on these pages but the guys treated the hungrily anticipating audience to large helpings of their finest playing. The show
started with The Pump, Luke and then Larry being introduced to the stage to huge cheers before launching their way into the harmony lead. They
worked in hooks from two Steely Dan songs (Peg and Josie) in much the same way that "E Minor Shuffle" on the Tribute to Jeff record borrows a
lick from Black Friday. Very cool. It is inspiration and jamming nuances like this that make these guys so awesome and the shows so mind-blowing.
You just know that no two shows will be the same - as Luke said, they'd played 70 shows or more this year and every time Larry had found a
different way of playing the haunting "It was only yesterday." This time, Larry jokingly requested that the audience offer him some inspiration by
nominating three notes with which he would base his unaccompanied solo. And he did - G, Bb and F# have never worked so well together before! All
but "All Blues" from the live CD were performed tonight but this was more than compensated by other songs - I won't spoil the surprises, except to
say that Luke did sing one song in tonight's set. For me, "Don't give it up", an old Carlton live favourite, was the highpoint of the evening, all
band members demonstrably having a complete blast. Rick Jackson (Keyboards) and Gary Ferguson (Drums) played their socks off throughout but special
mention must go to Chris Kent for his smokin' funky bass solo which brought a standing ovation from the wildly appreciative audience. The mutual
admiration and respect for each other's contributions is apparent throughout the set, a really cool vibe. Even though they have known each other
for over 20 years, Luke &Larry still seem genuinely surprised at each other's abilities to find a new way of expressing a solo. Amazing. For
every blistering lick which Luke offers, Larry replies with the subtelties and cool phrasing which graced Steely Dan records and many others.
Whilst there are ample displays of virtuosity throughout, it is the musical space, dynamics and spontaneity which the band create that makes
the performances so awe-inspiring. The pairing of these two maestros has been long-awaited by many, particularly as they have both voiced their
mutual respect for so many years. The contrast in Luke &Larry's tones and styles are refreshing yet blend seemingly effortlessly - there
are so many colours you really don't need a lighting rig at all. This tour is a jam session to end all jam sessions and a truly sublime
experience to witness. See you in Paris on Monday guys!

Coach House, San Juan Capistrano, USA - June 22, 2001.
What an incredible evening of music. I have been seeing Luke play since the mid-80's &always learn something new. He has been my favourite
guitar player since then and still is! I had never seen Larry Carlton "live" before so it was great to see him for the first time. Both players
were incredible &I felt very lucky to have been able to see this concert. They played every song from the "Live In Osaka" CD except "All
Blues". They also did Red House &one song that might have been an old Crusaders song. Luke's first solo on the opening tune of Pump brought
a standing ovation from an appreciative audience. Both players received ovations throughout the night after finishing their solos. And they
topped the evening off with a little Martini toast in the middle of one of the tunes. After the concert, both Luke & Carlton signed autographs.
It was great to meet Carlton for the first time and talk to Luke again. I was blown away that Luke actually remembered me from all the years I have
been seeing him play. It goes to show you that no matter how many fans around the world these great players meet during their lifetime, they do
remember faces!

BB King's Jazz Club, New York City, USA - June 7, 2001.
BB King's Jazz Club, New York City, USA - June 7, 2001.
Words have not yet been invented that can describe the incredible experience of seeing two guitar geniuses -- Steve Lukather and Larry Carlton -- perform
together on the stage. Carlton's legendary prowess and Luke's fiery licks blended together to create an absolute avalanche of bliss for every listener present.
They played as if they had been doing so forever, two distinct sounds blending into one incredible performance.
The first and second shows both began with The Pump. Luke got started first, dazzling the audience with an all-out, straight ROCKIN solo that shook the walls.
I felt my pant legs ripple with the vibes from the speakers. Larry followed with a more quiet and controlled response, distinctly The Pump, but all Larry's jazzy
style. What an amazing player this man is. There is no better.
One of Carlton's own releases followed The Pump, and unfortunately, I do not know the name. I knew who Larry Carlton was before this show, but I'd never heard his
solo stuff. This piece was, of course, dynamite.
All Blues followed the second selection, and I found myself staring in absolute, complete, and utter awe at Larry Carlton as he played his opening. Standing and
looking completely loose and at ease, he delivered a 10 minute solo of unprecedented genius and difficulty. He made it all look so EASY. Even Luke, standing in the
background, covered his eyes many times, a silent tribute to the most prolific guitarist alive. About half way through, I realized that the rest of the audience
was as silent as I. Larry's guitar was the only sound heard in the entire club. No one cheered; no one clapped. We only stared in absolute adoration as we
listed to Larry's miraculous playing. At the end, he received a standing ovation from everyone, and I wasn't sure if we would ever sit down.
All Blues was follwed by Red House, the only piece with vocals, which Luke performed beautifully. This, written by Jimi Hendrix, is of course, back to a loud
rocker, and Luke delivered the greatest solo I've ever seen him do. The man's fingers moved so fast, they blurred. This selection probably lasted about 10
minutes as well.
They left the stage and came back for an encore of Don't Give Up in the first show, and Room 335 in the second. Though it's hard to believe, they sounded
better live than they did on the album. What incredible musicianship.
Other highlights were without a doubt the base player, Chris Kent, who played with a groove that was absolutely astounding. He ended up doing a long solo
in which he broke one of his strings, and he still kept going. Amazing.
Luke and Larry together was -- and more than likely will always be -- the greatest show I have ever seen in my entire life. Their musical abilities dwarf
those of every other player in the biz. Indeed, any Lukather fans walked out Carlton fans, and Carlton fans walked out cheering for Lukather.
If you have the chance -- say they come within about a 12 hour drive of you -- GO. Drop everything, quit your job, divorce your spouse; go to this show.
You will find no better. Treat your ears to an evening of guitar magic performed by the two greatest guitarists to grace the musical community

Aladdin Theatre in Portland Oregon, USA - 20 May 2001
I was very fortunate to see the opening show of the Steve Lukather and Larry Carlton tour at the Aladdin Theatre in Portland Oregon yesterday. The
was fantastic!!!! Very intimate, only a 600 seater and approximately 450-500 people there. (Maybe because not a lot of notice before the show...I found
out about it Saturday morning here on this site.) Luke was having a blast, playing like a mad-man and Larry was his usual soulful self. They played most
of the tunes that they did during the Japan tour BUT played things with much more passion than the No Substitutions CD...if you can believe that!!!
There was a lot of interaction with the audience and during the encore Luke invited everyone up to the front of the stage. My wife and I were already
front row center, but it was even cooler being within an arm reach to both guitarists as they traded some beautiful licks. The audience was great
and cheered and danced. A lot of humerous moments from both artists during the show including Luke's reactions to Larry's finger picking and
incredible tones and jokes. Larry's response to the crowds cheers during both guitarist "quiet" moment of harmonic playing (Reminicent of Luke's
playing on Toto's Mama) was..."It's just chords guys!" The band included Terry Jackson on keys, Chris Kent on Bass and Gary Ferguson on drums. I
did take photos and as soon as the film is developed I will try to send them to Mark if he is willing to post them.
I encourage all you fans to check out the show and see an incredible performance that will stay with you for a lifetime!!! God Bless,
